Although it is underestimated, mental health is as important in our life as much as physical health. Perhaps mental health is not thought of being important because it is not something that can be seen by other people like a physical injury but imagine how much it effects your work and concentration when you are disturbed by some event in your life. You may lose concentration and may not be as much productive as you are on your normal days. It is important to understand not how much can the productivity of your company be affected when your employees are disturbed by some events in their life.
After the pandemic, our lives have anyways been affected in a negative sense and has disturbed our mental peace. Sitting in a room and having to do work on your own without the disturbance of your employees and your boss seemed fun for a while but this fun flipped very quickly. In our experience while working with various corporate sectors, we realised that these drastic changes in the perception of employees started to begin after 4 months of being locked in their homes. They complained of being depressed, frustrated, angry and having a lack of focus for their work. When we checked the productivity rates of the company the following couple of months. Luckily the companies we worked with had psychologists provided by us and action was soon taken which improved the mental health of employees with immediate effects. Although what most companies don’t understand is that when the employee is not in the right mental health it can be disastrous for the company.
The stress and strain of the pandemic has not ended. We can relate this Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Although there are very few people who would have perceived the pandemic so much negatively that it may turn into a disorder but the stress that everyone has gone through and the abrupt change that was made overnight in our social lifestyle had huge impacts on us. We are still adapting to the new lifestyle of limiting our social and physical interactions. And at these times the role of an organizational psychologist is very important. Personal issues for employees which they may not be able to share with their manager or their colleague can effect their work and productivity. We are no alien to the fact that if we share our issues that we have dealing with mentally with our friends and family, they may make fun of us or discard it like it is nothing. That can turn to be an additional factor for increased mental distortion for employees.
It would be very difficult to put all the concerns that an employer may face due to the poor mental health of their employees but you can imagine how vast they can be and why there may be a pressing need to have a psychologist in your company which not only understands but helps your employees to improve.
